Dave Walker went to Multnomah School of The Bible for 3 years following high school where he met and married Shirlene Moyes of Twin Falls Idaho. They lived in Twin Falls for 4 years, returning to Salem to settle in 1964. Three children were born to them - Lynette, Mark, and Jordan. Shirlene passed away in 1985. In 1986, Dave and Sandy were married.

Dave worked primarily in route sales jobs in the food industry - Coca-Cola, Oroweat, Franz - until his retirement in 1992. He has always been active in his church (presently Salem Alliance) and has developed his creative skills in the area of wood carving since marrying Sandy. At the present, he is providing leadership for the volunteers creating Salem’s Riverfront Carousel.

The following was submitted for the Fox’55 web site on Dave Walker’s behalf by Lee Hart:

Carousel project Carousel project Carousel project

Salem’s Riverfront Carousel project is to construct a reproduction of an old time merry-go-round or carousel, which will be placed at the Riverfront park in a secure building. The carousel will be 40 feet in diameter and have 30 horses, a mule and a zebra. The horses, mule and zebra are hand carved from basswood by Dave and his helpers in a workshop at Liberty Plaza in Salem, where anyone can go and watch. Detail of the carving and paint is awesome. Dave says that each horse takes about 1000 hours to carve and paint. The project is characterized in the 8-22-99 edition of Statesman Journal newspaper as “a labor of love.” Dave and Sandy are overseeing 65 carvers and 15 painters on the project. If all goes as planned, the carousel will open on July 4, 2001. Organizers estimate the finished project will cost $2.1 million.
