After graduation from high school, I went to work as a hard surface floor covering installer. In’56 I went to Lancaster PA. to Armstrong’s Floor Covering Insulation School. After graduating, I worked for a number of floor covering companies. It was during this time I met and fell in love with Jois Perkins [Perk] of The Dalles, OR.

In ’58 I had to take time off for Uncle Sam and joined the National Guard. I spent 6 months in the regular army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. While in the army Perk and I became engaged. We were married in Oct.’59. We have two sons, Bryan, born in ’61 and Darin, born in ’67.

In ’65 I made a career change and applied for and was hired by the City of Salem Fire Dept. I worked for the city for 29 years, first as a fire fighter and retiring as a fire captain in ’94.

Perk and I have 4 grandsons. The oldest graduated from North Salem High School this year and the youngest will start kindergarten next fall.

Since retiring, we have enjoyed traveling and have been to most of the continental 48 states. We travel by trailer (5th wheel) for about 3 months each year. Usually during the winter months. I think we would really like to become snowbirds.

In the summer we stay home, except for a few short trips. The rest of the time Perk tends her flowers and I volunteer at a local golf club and play as much golf as I can.

It has been a good life this first half and should be just as much fun the second half.

I am looking forward to the 45th year reunion and renewing old friendships.
